Emergency Visa Information

1. When can you apply for an Emergency Visa?

In extreme genuine emergency cases, such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member (spouse, father, mother, children, children’s spouse, grandchildren or their spouses, sibling or their spouse), subject to the submission of documentary evidence from India. Supporting documents may include a duly stamped hospital certificate, death certificate, and proof of relationship. 

2. Procedure for submitting an Emergency Visa application

Applications for a Regular (Paper) Visa must be completed online at www.indianvisaonline.gov.in by selecting UK-Birmingham as the Indian Mission and Miscellaneous Visa – X Misc. as the Visa Type (and NOT Tourist Visa).

After completing the online application, applicants must submit the printed and signed application in person at the Consulate General of India, Birmingham, between 1000 hrs and 1700 hrs on any working day.

During out-of-office hours, members of the public may contact the Consulate General of India, Birmingham on +44 (0) 74245 45269 by sending a WhatsApp message with the required documents. The concerned officer will respond accordingly.

Applicants are advised to bring all documents listed under Document Requirements together with the applicable visa fee of £200.00 (UK passport holders) or £136.00 (Non-UK passport holders).

3. Document Requirements

Standard Requirements (All Applicants)

• Regular (Paper) Visa Application Form: Completed online, printed and signed.

• Photograph: Two recent 50 mm × 50 mm passport-size colour photographs, with one photograph affixed to the application form. 

• Passport: Current foreign passport valid for at least six months with a minimum of two blank pages.

• UK Residence Proof: UK residence permit (e-Visa and share code, if applicable) and a recent utility bill as proof of address.

• Previous Visas: Copies of any previous Indian visas (regular or e-Visas).

• Emergency Evidence (Mandatory): Documentary proof of the emergency (e.g. a duly stamped hospital letter confirming the medical condition or a death certificate).

• Birth Certificate: Full version birth certificate.

Additional Requirements (If Applicable)

Applicants of Indian Origin

• Surrender Certificate.

• First and last pages of the cancelled Indian passport.

Minor Applicants (Below 16 Years)

• Consent Form duly signed by both parents.

• Self-attested copies of both parents' passports and their marriage certificate.

• Court custody order if the parents are legally separated.

Please note that the grant of an Emergency Visa is subject to the submission of complete documentation. The Consulate may request additional documents in specific cases. Applicants are advised not to finalise their travel arrangements until the visa has been issued.

Fee: The exact fee is payable in cash at the Consulate.
